This sojourn, (yes, I said sojourn instead of stay, because this town made me feel like royalty), all started with an invitation. An act of generosity God sent my way so I wouldn’t have to spend Easter alone. Little did I know that this family trip would turn into the discovery of one of the hidden gems of western France.

What is Le Pouliguen?
Le Pouliguen is a charming coastal town nestled on the Côte Sauvage. It is located just 90 minutes from Angers and about 3 hours from Paris by high-speed train. (Yes, before you ask, there is a train station! Though the main TGV stop is technically in La Baule—just a 5-minute drive or a lovely 15-minute walk from Le Pouliguen). La Baule usually gets all the spotlight, while Le Pouliguen stays peacefully in the shadows. To be honest, even some French people don’t know about this city!
But if you are ever looking for a place to stay during summer, or just want to explore beyond Paris, let me tell you why you should consider Le Pouliguen.
1. Le Pouliguen is the Best Beach Escape in Western France
I mean, do I even need to continue? I live in Angers, and the Lord knows I love this town for its vibe, vegetation, and beauty—but Le Pouliguen has the beaaaaach. After two years without seeing the ocean (since moving from Cotonou), I can tell you I was emotional. Its blue sea against the rugged rocks looks like a place straight out of a painting or a classic novel. And if the weather is warm enough, you can even go for a swim.
2. The Peace of the Côte Sauvage: Avoiding the Tourist Crowds
People usually complain about certain places in France being overcrowded with tourists. Well, that’s a problem you won’t face at Le Pouliguen. You will mostly meet locals on their bikes running errands or neighbors walking in beautiful, sunny dresses. The beachside might get a little busy, but don’t worry—there is enough space for everyone to breathe.

3. The architecture and Coastal Beauty
The first thing I noticed was the specific architecture of the houses, with their colorful windows and doors. If you love European architecture, you will love Le Pouliguen even more. It actually made me think of Greece! (I’ve never been there, but I’m sure when you see the houses, you will understand exactly what I mean).

4. A Taste of Brittany: The Famous Kouign-Amann
I have to give a special mention to the local specialty, the Kouign-Amann. It is the crown jewel of Breton pastries—a decadent, crusty cake made of laminated dough, layered with salted butter and sugar until it caramelizes into a golden masterpiece.
It is said that the best place to find them is at the Marché du Pouliguen (the local market) or the small boulangeries along the Quai Jules Sandeau (the port).
Why You Should Visit Western France Beyond Paris
I was only there for three days, and mainly ate, went to church, and ate some more. But who said a vacation is only good when you exhaust yourself with activities? Not me. Vacation is for rest and slow living. If those are the things you are looking for, then Le Pouliguen is the place to be.
Are you planning to come to France? Have you ever visited Western France? Let me know all about it in the comments. Also, did you know that French people can actually be very generous and nice? Please do not limit your experience to just Paris!
